Solutions for drinkable water

Châteauguay, Monday, July 5, 2021
Eric Allard, candidate for mayor, maintains that the current situation regarding the production and consumption of drinking water is unsustainable and very unfair to the citizens of Châteauguay, who have been paying the price for decades. To correct the situation, very costly technical measures are being taken by the City of Châteauguay, including the installation of a temporary filtration plant. However, since the lack of political representation for years, Eric Allard will himself question the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Andrée Laforest and the Minister responsible for the Montérégie, Simon Jolin-Barette, in order to correct the current injustice suffered by the citizens of Châteauguay."
The Quebec government is forcing Chateauguay to provide drinking water to neighboring cities. These same cities where there is unrestrained construction and where the consumption of drinking water is increasing more and more. It is always Châteauguay that is caught with the problem, that must limit its own development and his water consumption. And even worse, it is all of us who pay through our taxes for a host of study and engineering costs. We always lose out! "says Eric Allard.
According to City Councillor Lucie Laberge, the current council has been addressing the drinking water problem since 2018.
"Several measures have actually been adopted to improve the system, including several million dollars to repair, maintain and update our equipment. This is much more than what was done with previous administrations. But that's not enough, we need the Ministry of the Environment to accept our proposed temporary measure until our permanent facilities are in place.
Eric Allard goes on to say that government intervention and major investments to allow Chateauguay to regain control of its water production are essential. "The surrounding cities that we are obligated to serve must also be in solution mode. The citizens of Chateauguay have been generous enough with their taxes. The time has come when we will think of ourselves first.
The mayoral candidate notes that watering bans and drops in the level of drinking water reserves have been multiplying in recent years. Early heat waves in May and more and more of them don't seem to be exceptions anymore.
"We have to face the situation and adjust our ways of producing drinking water to the new reality. We need to stop putting out plasters as we did in the past. Our group is very proactive and ensures that the services provided to citizens are constantly improving," continued Eric Allard.
